Born on board! A Jordanian woman was recovering in a St. John's hospital after giving birth to a healthy daughter during a flight to Chicago from Amsterdam. The woman went into labour over the Atlantic on Tuesday, said Frank Houben, spokesman for the Dutch airline KLM. After conferring with flight controllers and three doctors who happened to be on board, the pilot decided to land in Newfoundland's capital. The baby was delivered in the plane's pantry minutes before the plane touched down around noon local time. "The mother and baby were doing fine," said Kelly Jamieson, operations manager for the St. John's International Airport Authority. "I'm sure she'll have a story to tell when she grows up." The woman was sent with her infant to the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's, while the flight continued to Chicago after a four-hour delay. Four other children travelling with the woman continued their flight to meet their father. |
Expelled from soccer team Galatasaray defender Stjepan Tomas has been expelled from the Croatian national soccer team prior to its friendly match against Israel for getting a late-night massage in his hotel room, according to a report. Croatian players usually are quarantined in a hotel complex ahead of international matches to remove them from distractions like family, friends or fans. The team also has official masseurs and other staff at their disposal, discouraging the presence of private doctors or assistants. Tomas was found in his room with a stranger late during a routine night check. "Tomas violated the disciplinary regulations and house rules," Coach Zlatko Kranjcar told the Sportske Novosti newspaper. "He arrived late to a meeting where the rules were clearly laid out and now he has broken he codex of behaviour. There will be no excuses." Tomas argued that players had employed private masseurs before and that he was not aware at the time that he was committing an infraction. |

No more playboy
Olympic officials have gone to court to try to get the Greek edition of Playboy taken off news stands. Marketing officials described the explicit take on the Olympics as a "brutal insult". Headlines such as "2004 seconds of ecstasy" and "Go for a Sexathon gold" corrupts the Olympic image, they say. Playboy also contains headlines such as "Gianna's wild Rogge and Roll" - a reference to International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge and Athens 2004 chief Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki. It also sports a cartoon of the Olympic rings composed of condoms, says BBC News Online. An Athens 2004 spokesman confirmed that a legal challenge had come from the image rights and marketing department. |

Alcohol inhaler
A US company is selling what it calls a "low-calorie, low-carbohydrate way to consume alcohol" that allows a people to consume spirits and truthfully say they have not been drinking. Alcohol Without Liquid (AWOL) vaporises a mixture of liquor and oxygen and pumps it through a tube to a hand-held medical-style inhaler, which the user puts in his or her mouth and breaths in a mist of scotch, vodka, or any other type of hard liquor. "Alcohol enters the bloodstream through the lungs rather than the stomach, making AWOL low calorie and low carbohydrate," explained Kevin Morse, president of Spirit Partners, the US manufacturer-distributor. "The resulting feeling is the same sense of well being an adult gets from consuming alcohol in the traditional manner, only milder," he said. His target customers are clubs, bars, lounges - places where people normally go to drink. But if your intention is to get drunk fast, AWOL will not help. It takes about 20 minutes to inhale the equivalent of one shot of alcohol, said company officials. |
Tailpiece
A man was approached by co-worker at lunch who
invited him out for a few beers after work. The man said that his wife
would never go for it, that she does not allow him to go drinking with the
guys after work. The co-worker suggested a way to overcome that problem:
"When you get home tonight, sneak into the house, slide down under the
sheets, gently make love to her. Women love it, and believe me, she'll
never mention that you were out late with the boys." |
