Cardiac Catheterisation
Q. My husband is 48 years old and has been suffering from angina for several years. Now he has been advised to undergo further check-ups overseas, especially cardiac catheterisation. I would appreciate if you could let us know about it.
Mrs. B. Patel, DSM.
A: Cardiac catheterisation is also known as catheter investigation or catheter test. It can be used to produce a coronary angiogram also known as coronary agiography. The test can provide a lot of valuable information about the heart. However, sometimes it is not possible to make decisions about a patient’s treatment unless a test called cardiac catheterization is done.
This is especially true if you have angina and are being assessed to see if surgery will help you out. In your case it will exactly show the severity and position of any narrowing or blockage in the coronary arteries. The procedure takes place in a fully equipped X-ray room. Some people have the test done, as a day case while others will need to stay in hospital.
A catheter is a long, flexible, plastic tube, roughly the diameter of the lead in a lead pencil. It is inserted into your blood vessels either in the groin or arm. You will be given a local anaesthetic so it should not be painful. If the catheter is inserted into the groin, a needle puncture will be made in the skin. If it is inserted into the arm, a small insertion will be made in the arm. You will not feel the catheter being moved around inside your chest. You will be able to watch the procedure on the video screen.

Little Ejaculation
Q. I am in my early 30s. I do not have very much fluid in my ejaculations when I meet my girl friend. Is this normal? I remember when I was young I used to masturbate and my ejaculations had plenty of fluid. Can I achieve this again and maintain it?
Concerned Reader, Tanga.
A. Semen, which is ejaculated during the male sexual act, is composed of fluids from different glands. The amount of ejaculate produced by a man does decrease with age, but it is totally an individual thing. The amount of fluid also depends on the frequency of the intercourse and storage. Indeed with excessive sexual activity storage gets less, but it does not mean that you are infertile.
You can remove your doubt of your fertility by having your semen analysed. Semen analyses will determine all the characteristics of semen, which can be studied and are important for the fertility of male. The essential things are volume of the semen, number of sperms, movements of the sperms and the shape of the sperm. This will at least set your mind at ease.

Hypothyroidism Affect My Libido
Q. Since I had my daughter nine months back ago and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, I have not been able to enjoy sex. The thought of sex makes me sick. Furthermore, I do not want my partner to touch, kiss or hug me. I have suggested we end our relationship but he has refused because he is truly in love with me. Is there something wrong with me for not feeling the same for him anymore? It has been nine months since we last had intercourse.
Concerned Reader, DSM.
A: Symptoms of hypothyroidism are the result of decreased metabolism, with slowing mental and physical activities. The process is gradual in onset and often mistaken for old age. Patient also complaints of gain in weight, constipation, and tiredness, vague generalize pains and disorder of menstrual period.
In advanced cases the face appears swollen with puffy eyelids, thick lips and an enlarged tongue. Sweating is absent and the skin is dry and readily flakes on rubbing. The hair tends to be sparser than normal and lustreless. Speech is slow and husky and in advanced cases deep and croaky. It also affects your sex life. Even if it did have a negative effect, it would not stop you from wanting to be hugged or kissed, so I suspect that something else is also going on here. Many women get the blues after they have had a child, and it does cause them to pull away from their partners for a time. If they give in to this condition, they can become more and more depressed.
My recommendation to these women is to force themselves to try to restore romance to their relationship. Sometimes a jump-start or two, that is to say a session where you hug and kiss and maybe even have sex, can reawaken your sexual instincts. Of course, perhaps your medical condition may override this effect.
You need to do investigations, followed by proper treatment. You should probably have a proper check-up done by your doctor. With the help of professionals working together, you can restore your love life.
