Dodds clinches TANZACAT 2004

Helm Blane Dodds and his crew Peter Dodds from South Africa emerged
overall winners of the 2004 Tanzania Catamaran Sailing Competition that ended at
the Dar es Salaam Yacht Club over the weekend.
Sailing Hoble Class boat 42, Dodd Brothers won the tough international sailing
competition after collecting 11 points from the eight-race competition.
On their way to the title, the winners were at number one position four times,
second in two races and third position in two races.
In a nationwise tally, hosts Tanzania took third overall position behind South
Africa and the Netherlands, at number one and two positions, respectively.
Another country that featured in the event was Poland.
Another South African duo, Duncan and Wolf, took the runner-up title with 16
points; they claimed first position in three races, third position in three
races and fourth position remaining four races.
Sailors from the Netherlands, Mark Zware and Bere de Bock, ended third overall
in their boat, collecting 30 points from eight races.
The fourth position went to the South African team of Hylton Hale and John
Cullum who made 45 points in their Suunto boat. They were followed by Boat 33
of JW Blom and Pde Paker from the Netherlands who collected 45 points.
At sixth position were Mark Coppel and Carolyn Fulton from South Africa who
bagged 61 points, followed by Esther Zeggeren and Jurjen Blokzej from the
Netherlands, who were seventh overall with 75 points.
The best from the Tanzanian team was number eight position by a boat called
Tiger. Helm Paresh Patel and his crew Alistair earned Tanzania that position
after collecting 76 points counted from the eight-round race.
Others who managed to finish in the top ten group include Richard Ayres and
John, who bagged 83 points, and Afrodizzy Cat boat manned by Robert and Debora,
which took tenth position.
Tanzanian sailing teams claimed 11th, 12th and 13th positions through Richard
and Karen teams, Tony and Alex who finished ahead of Andy and Tom.
JKT, Savio, Vijana unbeaten in
Kili RBA

JKT, Oilers, Vijana, Savio and Chang’ombe Boys are the top riders of
their groups in the 2004 edition Kili RBA League, which rages on every weekend
at the National Indoor Stadium.
JKT still unbeaten, are leading Group A with 10 points after winning all their
five matches. The team bagged 455 total baskets followed by Oilers with eight
points after winning four matches of their six encounters.
In a clean sheet performance, JKT beat Chui 118-29, ABC 109-48, Oilers 71-46
before beating Chui 81-41 and Oilers 69-43 in the aggregate matches. In another
group, Vijana are leading with 14 points and 509 baskets after playing seven
matches, followed by Pazi who have collected 10 points after winning five
matches.
Vijana beat Pazi 68-55, Cargo 84-52, Magone 82-35 and Ilala Flats 85-45. On
aggregate matches, Vijana beat Magone 61-31, Cargo 73-30 and Pazi 56-52.
Savio are leading the third group with 14 points after playing seven matches,
winning all seven and have bagged 481 baskets so far.
Savio, the defending champions, beat Chang’ombe Boys, UDSM Outsiders, TM
Rockets, Magnet, while in the second phase Savio thrashed Chang’ombe Boys, UDSM
Outsiders and TM Rockets.
Matumla shines in Dar boxing

Karim Matumla recorded the fastest knockout in the Champion of
Champions Boxing Tournament when he stopped Abas Ally of Kawe in the early
seconds of the first round of the quarter final stage bout held Tuesday at
Amana.
The powerful hook was so violent that his coach had to throw in the towel to
save Ally from further punishment.
Karim Matumla is a national team boxer, but did not participate in the recent
regional boxing tournaments that had attracted many national boxers.
Another National team hero, Petro Mtagwa, from MMJKT romped into the semi-final
after beating Hussein Majid of Mbweni before Masoudi Bilali of Ruaha Galaxy
outplaying Atupele Mussa of PTW.
Also qualified to play in the semi-final stage were Omari Urungu of Kawe A, who
outdid Hamisi Shindo of Kawe B. SADC Games gold medallist Hashim Simon qualified
for the next stage on the walkover after his opponent Hussi failed to turn up
for the bout.
The tournament ends tomorrow after the final stage bouts also at Amana Social
Hall, Dar es Salaam.

Bujumbura joins Intercity Boxing

Burundi has for the first time joined other East African countries
in the Ally Hassan Mwinyi Boxing Tournament, to be held in Dar es Salaam from
December 5 to 10.
The Assistant Secretary of the Interim Committee of the Dar es Salaam Regional
Boxing Association (DABA), Juma Selemani, said the country would bring boxers
from Bujumbura, the capital of the war-torn Central African country.
Other East and Central African cities confirmed to send their participants in
the inaugural event, include Kigali (Rwanda), Nairobi, Mombasa (Kenya), Mahe
(Seychelles), Maputo (Mozambique) and Kampala (Uganda).
Meanwhile, DABA has said it needs Tsh. 21 million is needed to foot the
preparation cost of the five-day event. Part of the money will be spent on
buying boxing gear as well as prizes for winning teams.
DABA has already picked 31 boxers under trainers Gaudence Buyaga of Mabibo,
Victor Andrew of Magereza, Rashid Miale and Benjamin Mwangata of JKT.
The boxers, according to Selemani, include Omar Idd, Salehe Omary, Sadiki Nuru
(lightfly); Issa Athuman, Sunday Elias, Daudi Mada (fly); Emmilian Patrick,
Undule Rangson and Pambano Phillipo (bantam).
Others are Nasser Mafuru, Petro Mtagwa (feather); Karim Matumla, Hashim Saimon,
Hamis Shindo (light); Yohana Robert, Hamis Shabaan, Julius Yona and Seleman
Kidunda (light welter).
Also in the list are Lusajo Mwaipopo, Joseph Martin and Mada Maugo (welter);
Mussa Mwaisori, John Serenge, Leonard Machichi (middle); Alfred Luhunga, Godfrey
Mbunda, Godwin Simkamba (lightheavy); Bahati Patson, Rajabu Madinda (heavy);
Yahya Hamis and Novatus Abondi (super heavy).
Tanzanian to head EA Tae Kwon Do
body

Tanzanian Prosper Masatu Makonya
has been elected president of the newly formed East and Central African Tae Kwon
Do Confederation in an election held on October 30 in Nairobi, Kenya.
Prior to being elected to this new post, Masatu was the chairman of the Union of
Tae Kwon Do Tanzania and an executive member of World Tae Kwon Do
Federation(WFT).
Masatu told The Express from Nairobi the election took place at Visa Place,
Nairobi, and was attended by representatives from countries of East and Central
Africa and those from Zone 5.
Masatu named the countries that participated in the inauguration of the
confederation as Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Congo and Burundi.
“Before the election we had already finished making our own constitution as per
the system and regulations of the world Tae Kwon Do body WTF and the African
Federation of Tae Kwon Do Unions (AFTU),” he explained.
According to Masatu, the headquarters of the Federation will be in Tanzania.
“I am trying to seek government assistance for allocation of a premise in one of
the state-owned buildings, I hope the government will provide us with the
assistance,” he said.
However, due to the voluminous responsibilities in other Tae Kwon Do bodies,
Masatu promised to delegate power to his subordinates to have an effective
system of governance within Tae Kwon Do administration.
Hockey Union turns into
association

The Tanzania Hockey Union(THU)will be known as the Tanzania Hockey
Association(THA) after getting a final nod from the Registrar of Sports.
The Secretary General of THU, Yusuf Jusabani said the Tanzania Mainland Hockey
body decided to convert itself into an association after Zanzibar pulled out to
form its own association.
According to Jusabani, the Hockey body has also sent constitutional amendments
to the Registrar of Sports and was waiting for its go-ahead.
Modern studio coming soon

A modern state-of-the art music recording studio will be opened soon
in Dar es Salaam. It will start operating by recording tracks of new and
upcoming artistes, it has been learnt.
The studio, to be known as ASET Production, is owned by African Stars
Entertainment Company (ASET).
The Managing Director of ASET, Asha Baraka, told The Express in Dar es Salaam
recently the studio located at Mbezi Beach near the TMS hospital will be
officially launched after the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
According to Baraka, the studio will make sure all upcoming artistes get a fair
deal and quality recording facilities.
“The studio is however, not exclusively for upcoming artists but will also cater
for established artists in various genres of music,” Baraka explained.
Apart from owning the studio, ASET has two dance music bands, namely the African
Stars ‘Twanga Pepeta’ and African Revolution ‘Tam tam’.
Kili All Stars enthrall Dar

Players’ excellence and
spectacular encounters between all Stars teams were highlights of last weekend’s
Kili basketball scene at the National Indoor Stadium.
Organised by the Dar es Salaam Regional Basketball Association (DARBA) with the
backing of Kilimanjaro Premium Lager, the All Stars weekend saw super stars
displaying the best of dunking, three point conversion and other techniques of
modern basketball.
The hottest figures in the dunking wizardry were Juma Kissocky of Western
Conference and Abdallah Ramadhani Dulla of Eastern Conference. The two players
won admirers for their super skills.
In the All Stars match, Western Conference emerged the winners after trouncing
their Eastern counterparts 75-68 in a thrilling match held at the National
Indoor Stadium.
The match’s biggest attraction was at the centre position, where Frank Kusiga
of Western and Dulla faced fierce opposition in demonstration linking skills.
Eastern were leading 34-31 until breather. Western Conference began the second
half a completely changed team. They managed to level the score before taking a
lead of 52-49 in the third quarter of the game.
The Kili RBA League top scorer, Charles Makene of Western led the score sheet
with 22 points followed by Abdallah Dulla of Eastern who bagged 11 points.
In Kili Ladies All Stars, Western Conference thrashed Eastern Conference 56-47
in a thrilling match held at the same venue last Sunday.
The Star players of the match were Nipael Kessy of Western and Penina Igwe of
Eastern who brought home 16 points each.
In personal skill display, Evodia Kazinja of Western was the best player in
three-point conversion, while Bahati Mgunda shone in the men’s category.
JKT make flying start

The headquarters’ JKT boxing team made a flying start in the
Champion of Champions Boxing Tournament winning three bouts in the opening
matches held at Amana Social Centre, Dar es Salaam, Monday.
Hashim Simon led his team’s winning spree when he outplayed Joseph Mwafula in a
one-sided bout.
Another JKT boxer, Msafiri Majia knocked out Abdallah Halfan of Amana Centre in
the first round of the welterweight category.
Sunday Elias of JKT earned his team the third victory after beating Rashid
Kameda on a 4-1 decision.
In the Feather weight category, Haj Pwaga of Mgulani hammered Ally Abdallah of
Amana in the second round, while Haji Abdallah of PTW beat Christopher Msua of
Moshi Police College Kilimanjaro.
Pugilist Shauri Yasin of Police team floored Abdul Raffiia of Kawe B in the
third round to record a first win for his team while Kawe A boxer, Hussein
Abdallah settled the matter with Riziki Salum of Mgulani, who he beat on a 5-0
decision.
Sponsored by Wonder Milk under Cowbell brand banner, the tournament end tomorrow
and chairman of Tanzania Olympic Commitee, Raphael Kubaga, will officiate the
closing ceremony.
Maajar excels in Monthly Mug

Former Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club Golf Captain, Maajar Sharif,
emerged winner of Monthly Mug Golf tournament held over the weekend at the Club
course.
It was his score of one under par net 69 strokes that earned him the title as
well as the best score of the tournament. The division’s runner up was Raphael
Letara, who fired two over par net 72 strokes, three strokes behind the winner.
Kenyan High Commissioner Mubiri Muhita was also among the golfers with good
performance in the 18-hole tournament. Muhita took B division title beating his
closest challenger Pearson Masoko by a single stroke.
Muhita carded 73 net while the Masoko completed the course with 74 net.
With a score of three over par net 73 strokes, Ayne Magombe continued to shine
in the Ladies as she was the lone winner of the division.
Others in the winning list include Thomas Nagabo who won C division and Young
Theon Nazeer who emerged the winner of the Junior Division, after posting 28
stable ford points.
The Club’s golf captain said there would be no tournament this weekend.
