Oilers stun Pazi in Super Cup qualifier
By Burton Brown
Oilers dealt a blow to Tanzania’s basketball veterans, Pazi, beating
them 79-76 in the Kili Super Cup qualifier held Monday at the National Indoor
Stadium.
That was second narrow defeat for Pazi after Chang’ombe Boys dealt a similar
blow in the quarter final stage of Kili RBA League match, held on Eid el Fitr
Day, November 14.
Pazi, Oilers, Magone and UDSM Outsiders failed to qualify for the semi-finals
after losing their matches last Sunday.
Oilers lost to Vijana, while UDSM Outsiders made exit after their defeat from
Savio while JKT forced an early exit on Magone in a one-sided quarter final last
Sunday.
Pazi were themselves to blame for the double defeats in less than 24 hours. In
their match against Oilers, the basketball veterans were leading 18-11, 40-19
until breather.
The third quarter saw Oilers coming on with rejuvenated force with Jeremia
Joseph and Lusajo Samwel toying with Pazi defence at will.
The players added 15 points in the third quarter and managed to lead 63 against
57 points of Pazi.
Mtwa Mwandemane led the score sheet with 19 points, followed by Gwakisa
Mwasakyeni of Pazi who fired home 16 points.
World optimists to race in Dar next year
By Express reporter
After the success of TANZACAT 2004, Dar es Salaam Yacht Club (DYC)
will now host Africa’s biggest racing event set to take off next year.
Named the fifth IODA African Optimist Cham- pionship, the event is scheduled
between August 19 and 28, 2005.
According to the General Manager of DYC, Mike Stanley, the cham- pionship to be
hosted by the Club will get support from Kenyan and Tanzanian Optimist Racing
Associ- ations.
According to him, IODA has recently encouraged the development of the African
championships to boost African sailing, and whilst the World Cham- pionship
remain the focal point of the year, Continental Championship, including the
African Championship, form a very important part of the racing calendar.
The organisers’ press release says each member country in Africa can send up to
seven sailors, qualified in national trials. IODA also encouraged at least two
out of the seven-member team to be female sailors in order to encourage growth
in the girls’ fleet.
The African champi- onships to date have been held in Egypt, Morocco and South
Africa. The next race will be held in Kenya, also in 2005.
“We anticipate the optimist championship would be a tremendous boost for sailing
in East Africa, and would attract over 60 top-class sailors from many of the
African countries,” Stanley said.

Kenyan top lady golfer Rose Naliaka beat Tanzanian star Sophia, on
her way to win Uganda Ladies Open Golf Championship at the Kitante course.
Naliaka had beaten Viggo in Tanzania Ladies Open Championship held in Arusha and
Viggo wanted to use the Ugandan event to settle the score with the Kenyan.
However, as reported in the Ugandan papers, Naliaka led all the way to go 22
strokes better than the event’s runner-up Sophie Viggo.
Viggo is the only player to have come closest to Naliaka when she fired 77 on
day two but crumbled on day three.
In contrast, Naliaka showed the nerve to perform on the big stage. She made
brilliant tee shots but had a few problems with her short game.
Naliaka also became the first lady golfer to win the Tanzania Open, the Kenya
Open and the Uganda Open the same year.
The star, standing at over six feet, showed a game reminiscent of her display in
2001. At that time, the widely travelled player shot level par 72 on day one to
take a nine-stroke lead.

JKT assured themselves of a place in the final of Kili RBA League
after beating cup holders Savio 62-47 in the second match of three games’ semi
finals held Tuesday at the National Indoor Stadium.
Earlier Monday, JKT beat Savio 80-50 in the first semi. The third game had to be
cancelled since JKT had already won twice.
JKT were leading 14-13 in the first quarter and the closely contested match saw
JKT leading 25-24 until breather.
Led by Michael Mwita and Jije Makani, Savio woke up in the third quarter to fire
four points in succession, but JKT were quick to make counter and used the last
five minutes to pump home more points.
Frank Simkoko and Frank Kusiga brought a new determination to JKT as their
efforts changed the game and made JKT lead 46-32 at the end of the third
quarter.
The match’s biggest attraction was the hot duel in the linking role between
Michael Mwita of Savio and Frank Kusiga of JKT.
Despite the defeat, Michael Mwita starred the score sheet 17 points followed by
Juma Kissocky of JKT who scored 16 points. Frank Simkoko and Charles Makene of
JKT managed to score 14 and 15, respectively.
The rebound master of the match was George Tarimo of Savio who managed 12
points.
JKT will play with the winner of the match between Vijana City Bulls and
Chango’mbe Boys.
