100 golfers meet in ADB Golf tourney

Over a hundred golfers are expected to lock horns this weekend as
the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club course hosts another 18-hole golf tournament to
be held this Saturday.
With the inaugural backing of African Development Bank (ADB), the tournament,
according to the Club’s golf captain Mustafa Alibhai, would be played on
stroke-play basis for golfers in all divisions.
Said Alibhai, golfers from all divisions, A, B, Ladies and Juniors, are eligible
to play and witness ADB first encounter on the golf course.
The Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club is at the peak of its high season that is
expected to climax in mid December 2004.
Meanwhile, Mustafa Alibhai and his mates Firoz Ghor, Shabbir Rajbhai and Mustafa
Essajee fired the best score of Toyota Cup Golf Tournament, held over the
weekend at Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club.
The quartet carded a combined score of 87 points in the 18-hole tournament.
The runner-up position went to Irfaan Jaffer, Gautam Ahuja, Nazir Tajudeen and
Dalmin Patel, who fired a combined score of 85 points.
The team of Brigitte Bouquist, George Bourquist, Bhupesh Aima and Lass
Laitkainen claimed the third position after posting a combined score of 81
points.
Tanzanian delegates to cheer Kotta

Three delegates from the Miss Tanzania Committee and the mother of Miss Tanzania
2004, Faraja Kotta, left for Sanya, China, to accompany Tanzania’s
representative in the Miss World Pageant, ahead of the finals, which takes place
December 4.
Speaking to The Express soon before their departure Monday, the coordinator of
Miss Tanzania pageant, Hashim Lundenga, said together with the parent of Faraja,
other people in the contingent were Bosco Majaliwa, Albert Makoye and Lundenga
himself.
“We also expect other Tanzanians to come and join us in China to give moral
support to our ambassador. The total number of Tanzanians now backing Faraja
Kotta is nine,” he added.
Faraja Kotta is the 11th Tanzanian representative in the Miss World pageant
since the country re-opened the pageant in 1994.
Meanwhile, it has been learnt that Tanzania’s renowned fashion designer, Mustafa
Hassanali, has created a master piece for Faraja Kotta, which she will wear on
stage during Miss World 2004 beauty pageant in China.
According to Mustafa Hassanali, Faraja has taken with her a whole range from the
new collection of Hassanali, which was unveiled at Redds Lifestyle 2004 Fashion
show in October.

Tanzania’s legendary professional boxer, Joseph Marwa ‘Smart Boy’ is set to
exchange blows with UK-based boxer, Amour Amran Mzungu, in a 10-round
professional boxing bout to be held this Sunday at Railway Gerezani, Dar es
Salaam.
A rare fight towards the end of this year, the bout will test the boxers’ skills
in the cruiserweight category.
The co-ordinator of the fight, Bakari Selemani, said this week the fight is
under the supervision of Pugilist Syndicate of Tanzania (PST) and it will be a
non-title bout.
Selemani told The Express before the main bout, there would be also supporting
bouts in which Rashid Ally would face Obote Ameme in super-bantamweight.
Also in the under card bouts, Mkwanda Matumla will lock horns with Seif Mohamed
in lightweight bout while Thomas Benard will exchange blows with Mustapha
Ndangire in welter weight category.
DABA picks 20 for Intercity Boxing

The Dar es Salaam Amateur Boxing Association (DABA) has picked 20
boxers to represent the City in the Ally Hassan Mwinyi Intercity Boxing
Championship, to be held at DDC Kariakoo from December 5 to 9.
The Deputy Secretary General of DABA, Juma Selemani, told The Express that two
teams, A and B, would be formed.
He said the A side, to be called Ndovu, would have Muhsin Mohamed, Issa
Athumani, Emillian Patrick, Nasser Mafuru, Hashim Simon, Selemani Kidunda,
Joseph Martin, Leonard Machichi, Godfrey Mbunda and Junior Kimaro.
The B side, Mzizima, he added, includes Omari Iddi, Sunday Elias, Undule
Langson,Raphael Senga, Petro Mtagwa, Hamisi Shaaban, Msafiri Majia, Mussa
Maisori, Alfred Luhunga and Bahati Patson.
Meanwhile, Selemani said Kampala City of Uganda would send 11 boxers and four
officials while from Kigali, Rwanda, there would be eight boxers, accompanied by
three officials.
The Kenyan capital, Nairobi, has confirmed to send 11 pugilists while Mombasa
will also send 11 boxers. From Bujumbura, Burundi, eight boxers will represent
the City and the last to confirm was Maputo, Mozambique, from which nine boxers
will come.
Dar picks 9 for Uganda table tennis meet

The Dar es Salaam Region Table Tennis Association (DRTTA) has picked nine
players to represent the City in the Intercity Table Tennis Championship that
starts today in Mbale, Uganda.
The acting Secretary General of DRTTA, Louis Mugisha, said the team was expected
to leave yesterday ahead of the event.
According to Mugisha, the players in the squad include William Paul, Ally
Warioba and Nicolas Mnubi, who went as men’s team while Agripina Habicht and
Mwamvita Abdul will represent the women’s team, together with Fatuma Suleiman,
Rose Mbayo, Massoudi Issa and Rogers Dismas, who left as players in the juniors
category.
“With the handpicked team of well-trained players under national team coach,
Issa Matalaso, we are sure to perform well in Uganda and come back with a
trophy,” he assured.
In this year’s edition, the three cities of Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Zanzibar
will represent Tanzania in Uganda.
Herman Zakaria of Tanga is the defending champion in the men’s category, Mombasa
team goes to Mbale as the women’s champions while Mbale are the men’s
titleholders.
Fans keenly await JKT, Vijana clash

Excitement is building up over the Kili RBA basketball final between Vijana
‘City Bulls’ and JKT.
Vijana and JKT meet at the National Indoor Stadium December 11 in the final that
will see JKT trying to avenge its defeat in the Super Cup final, which enabled
Vijana to dethrone the former title holders.
Banking on their scoring machines, Charles Makene, Juma Kissocky and Ashraf
Harun, JKT are expected to storm the indoor stadium after getting enough build
up during the Armed Forces Games, which climaxes this weekend in Zanzibar.
In the middle of the field, Frank Kusiga and Frank Simkoko will be feeding the
trio for effective baskets.
However, Vijana who missed the title for about five years, are determined to
clinch the basketball title of this year.
The team’s coach, Manase Zablon, said his players had begun preparations for the
KILI RBA League effectively since June this year with all the team stars in a
great form.
He explained professional player Abdullah Ramadan Dulla will be there to govern
his team’s major setback to JKT armymen.
Together with the top marksman, Mohamed Ally Dibo, and Chisarya Mwiki upfront,
his players are confident of excelling in the final.
Last year’s champions, Savio, will play for the third place play off against
Chang’ombe at the same venue December 11.

The Tanganyika Motor Sports Club (TMSC) has released the route to be used by the
drivers in the ninth National Rally Championship slated for a flag off December
12 in Dar es Salaam.
The Club’s Chairman, Satinder Birdi, said the event would principally cover four
sections adjoining Kilwa Road, which connect Dar es Salaam and the regions of
southern Tanzania.
Birdi said the first leg starts at Mji Mwema, Kigamboni and climaxes at Vikindu,
where cars join Kilwa Road on the way to a service park, to be named later.
The second leg, according to Birdi, starts at Sotele (Mkuranga District) and
finishes at Mwarusembe. The third leg starts at Mkuranga towards Kitonga,
Chamazi and ends at Mbagala with the cars taking the Kilwa Road on the way to
the service park.
The last leg repeats the second section, which will see the cars speeding to
Mwarusembe on the way to the City centre after a stop over at the service park.
Birdi said he expected all six clubs to send participants in the event, which
climaxes Tanzania’s the 2004 rally season.
The clubs to feature in the rally are Dar es Salaam Motors, Iringa Motors,
Tanga, Arusha and hosts Tanganyika Motors.
Mafuru finally gets better of Mtagwa

After many futile efforts, Naser Mafuru of Prisons eventually recorded his first
win over archrival Petro in the Dar es Salaam Open Boxing meet, staged last
Sunday at Mnazi Mmoja.
Dar es Salaam Amateur Boxing Association (DABA) staged the boxing competition to
pick the best players to represent the City in the Ally Hassan Mwinyi Boxing
Cup, to be held between December 6 and 9 in Dar es Salaam.
Mafuru climbed the ring with confidence and used extra care to ensure Mtagwa
stayed out of his five throughout the four-round match.
Four judges voted in favour of Mafuru while one voted for Mtagwa.
In the light flyweight bout, Muhsin Mohamed outplayed Omari Iddi while JKT star,
Sunday Elias, beat Oswald Chaula in the closely contested fight.
Also in the winning side were Issa Athumani of Prisons who recorded a 5-0
verdict over Daudi Mada in the flyweight and Undule Langson who won on technical
knock out after his opponent Emilian Patrick was told to discontinue following a
cut on his left eye.
Other bouts held on Sunday include that of SADC Games gold medallist Hashim
Simon, who easily outplayed Paschal Cosmas in the lightweight bout.
Selemani Kidunda outplayed Julius Yona in the lightweight while Joseph Martin of
JKT marked an easy win over Lusajo Mwaipopo of Prisons.
The final bouts saw Leonard Machichi beating Mussa Maisori in the middleweight
and Godfrey Mbunda beating Alfred Luhunga in light-heavy weight.

After its successful venture in Morogoro last week, the Tanzania Cricket
Association (TCA) now plans to stage a mini cricket tournament in Iringa before
the fall of this year.
Billed as unending progress to motivate the growth of cricket in all regions of
Tanzania, Iringa expects to see real cricket in the end of December at a venue
to be disclosed later.
The chairman of TCA, Zully Rehemtullah, told The Express the massive success of
the just ended mini cricket tournament in Morogoro motivated him to extend the
competition to other regions, including Iringa, which comes next after Morogoro
and Dar es Salaam.
Meanwhile, Msufini Primary School emerged the overall winner of the Morogoro
Mini-Cricket tournament that ended at Sokoine University grounds in the region.
The school won in both boys and girls categories.
Uhuru Primary School were runners-up in both boys and girls categories.
Also on the same venue, Dar es Salaam combined cricket team beat their Morogoro
counterparts by six wickets in a 26 overs friendly match.
The winners managed to chase the 133 runs posted by Morogoro ladies.
