in Arusha
By Kazi Ally, Arusha
Tanzania Rugby Union (TRU) is on the verge of completing the first
modern stadium, ahead of the Four Nations International Rugby Championship which
is scheduled for a kick-off in Arusha next month.
Talking to The Express this week, Tanzanian national rugby team coach and
manager, Tinus Aucamp, said the stadium was in the sports complex built near
ISMA ground, about 10km west of Arusha town off the Manyara Road.
“The absence of the modern stadium obliged us to hire the Braeburn and ISMA
school grounds for all our national and international matches, I am now glad
that we have our own stadium,” said Aucamp.
He said the complex was officially known as Friedkin Recreation Centre, and
together with the stadium it contains other facilities for recreation and for
the needs of the public.
Aucamp said the four nations rugby championship, which includes Rwanda, Burundi,
Mauritius and Tanzania, would take place from August 6 to 13.
The Tanzanian side, which was selected two months ago, continues to train in
Arusha and later in Dar es Salaam ahead of the event.
Tanzania shone in last year’s event, which had only two foreign teams, Rwanda
and Burundi.

Nyambui
commends Marwa, Nyangelo
By Express Reporter
Tanzania’s national team coach has commended his athletes Dickson
Marwa, Patrick Nyangelo and Sarah Majah for their impressive performances in the
Gold Coast Marathon, held over the weekend in Queensland, Australia.
Nyambui said all the athletes, including Oswald Reverian, who finished in the
sixth position, deserved praise for fighting bravely in the race.
“The weather was unfriendly there, apart from the fact that my athletes did not
get enough time for practice exercises prior to the run,” he said.
According to Nyambui, the heavy rains that fell on the athletes throughout their
42km race affected Dickson Marwa’s bid to beat the qualifying time set for the
Commonwealth Games.
Marwa, who clocked 2 hours, 16 minutes and 14 seconds, was four minutes behind
the qualifying time of 2 hours 12 minutes 00 seconds.
On Nyangelo’s performance, Nyambui said his time was good since he was under 1
hour, five minutes. Nyangelo clocked 1 hour, 03 minutes and 35 seconds while
Shibutani finished in 1:03:40 two seconds ahead of Enoki.
In the races held over the weekend, Patrick Nyangelo began by winning the ASICS
Half Marathon before Dickson Marwa took the number one position in the 42km Gold
Coast Marathon. Sarah Majah emerged second runner-up in the Gold Coast Marathon.
In the tough 42km Marathon, Dickson Marwa had to work hard to shrug off stiff
opposition from Japanese runner Tsutomu Saeki and John Henwood of New Zealand.
In the women’s marathon, Sarah Majah failed to beat the Australian runners
Jackie Fairweather and Lauren Shelley before settling for third place.
Jackie Fairweather won the race after clocking 2:34:45 followed by her
compatriot Lauren Shelley, who spent 2:37:20 on the road, while Majah finished
in 2:40:39.
Handball (THF) opts for
decentralisation
By Burton Brown
The newly elected Executive Committee of Tanzania Handball
Federation (THF) has formed mini-committees in its bid to produce the best for
the sport countrywide.
Talking to The Express this week, THF President, David Mataka, said the
formation of the mini-committees aimed at creating effective management for the
handball body, instead of leaving all responsibilities and power to the
President and the central committee.
According to Mataka, the committees formed will deal with finance and planning
under the Vice President of THF, according to the regulations of the federation.
Other ones include the technical and training committees, while discipline and
medical committees have also been formed.
He said each committee would have five members; each entitled to select its own
leader.
Meanwhile, the East African Handball Club Championship is expected to take place
in Songea, Ruvuma, in September this year. Mataka named Uganda, Kenya, Djibouti,
Somalia, Ethiopia, Burundi, Rwanda, DRC Congo and Congo Brazzaville as countries
already confirmed as participants in the championship.
