season, which starts in Dar es Salaam early next month.
Some of the new faces emerged in the Kili Secondary School basketball tournament
of last year.
“The new players are high spirited and want to use the tournament as a platform
to demonstrate their basketball skills to the fast growing number of fans,” said
Zablon Manase, coach of Vijana City Bulls, whose team has recruited a number of
new players this year.
Some of the new basketball players are John Mabula, Nuru Awadh, Rajabu Msoma and
Adam Mshindo.
The players excelled in various youth basketball tournaments, staged in the
region under the Dar es Salaam Regional Basketball Association (DARBA), and
others organised by governmental and non-governmental organisations.
Adam Mshindo asserted that the growing number of youth basketball tournaments in
Dar es Salaam has opened the doors for many youngsters wanting to join the
sport.
“For most of us, basketball is associated with scholars. The American NBA League
has a big influence in this new trend,” he said.
This year’s Kili RBA League will field eight teams. The teams include Vijana,
Savio, JKT, Pazi, Chang’ombe Boys, Oilers, ABC and UDSM Outsiders.

After a painful defeat against their archrivals Simba in the Tusker Cup final,
Yanga is hoping they will do a better job in the Vodacom Premier league, when
the second round of the league kicks off next week.
The club’s technical director, Nassor Duduma, said the disastrous results of the
Tusker Challenge cup final had propelled the club to lay better strategies for
the premier league.
“The match was a good lesson to us. We found some leaks in the overall
performance which we are working on to ensure the team’s impeccable going in the
league,” he said.
The team’s captain, Omary Kapilima, said his players were involved in tedious
training at the Kaunda Stadium Jangwani in readiness for the restart of the
league.
“Our sole attention is on the Vodacom League,” he said.
He said they had the ability to clinch this year’s league title and hope to
overcome Moro United’s eight point lead.
Moro United are leading the league at 40 points, followed by Yanga with 32
points and Simba with 30 points; all have played 15 matches.
