Enough of this impossible state
Dear Editor,
I wish to take up arms against the difficulties of getting around in Dar. I don’t think many will argue with me when I say that it is getting worse every day – the congestion, the masses of frustrated drivers, the poor souls waiting in buses in crowds, then painfully squashed when they do get on. Sometimes at that junction near the Movenpick hotel there is what looks like a total jam through people wanting to turn right with no room to do so whilst others want to turn left but the way is blocked.
The situation is exacerbated by aggressive drivers, they push their way forward without caring that their move has plugged the route for other cars. Only when the traffic police are directing does the sorry mess get sorted out a bit, we should all thank the Almighty for these officers, there would probably be many free fights in the middle of the road without them.
Some strategy must be thought up before rush hours turn into complete gridlock. Perhaps the obvious one would be for private cars to be forbidden between certain hours. Of course there would be plenty of exemptions – but aren’t we resigned to living in a world where there’s one law for you and me and another one for the big shots? Maybe the traffic police can think up some rules that could deliver us from this exhausting chaos.
Yours sincerely,
Car passenger, Ilala.
